Flashcards:Obsidian and Spaced Repetition or Anki?
Combining memorization tools with your note-taking process
Recently, I had a lot of material to memorize. My first choice was the tried-and-true Anki, but I found imho a better solution—the Spaced Repetition plugin for Obsidian. I already use Obsidian for my daily notes, with an AutoHotkey shortcut that opens the app and creates a new note with the current date. I don't categorize notes by changing folder structures (that approach always ended in chaos for me). Instead, I rely on backlinks and general-purpose tags, combined with the Advanced Tables plugin for tasks like To-Do lists. My notes are synced between computers using Git and a VCS server, this setup works far better than it sounds... it's not complicated! :)
What do I gain by using the plugin? Everything stays in one app, so I don’t worry about syncing or metadata for my flashcards. When learning a new topic, I separate it in the note with "dividers" and use slash-based tags that automatically create hierarchies. This allows me to select the scope of material for review. Anything below a tag that matches a simple syntax rule becomes a flashcard.

In Obsidian, a deck icon appears in the sidebar, letting you choose the root hierarchy of your cards, just like any other plugin. It’s a seamless and integrated way to manage both notes and spaced repetition.
